River Mont Golf Course first opened for play in 1966
River Mont Golf Course was built on rolling hills and has spectacular views of the countryside. The tree-lined fairways are wide and a few of them have dogleg designs. The small greens are undulating and difficult to read. The signature hole is #16, a 338-yard, par 4, with a dogleg left fairway.
River Mont Golf Course closed in 2005.
River Mont was not a long course. The front was extremely open. Only the worst shot would find the woods on most holes. Hole two was driveable on a cold, hard day. Hole five was a short dogleg right par 5 that could be reached with a driver and short iron. The only difficult hole was #10. A short par five with a slight dogleg left. It was like teeing off from the tail of a crooked alligator with dropoffs left and right.
River Mont was one of those places where you just showed up and played with whoever was there. If no one at the pro shop when you showed up, you could just pay when you get done or pay next time.
Rumor has it that the owner lost the property in a divorce settlement. There should be a law that the wife can't take anything related to golf, especially THE COURSE.
